Flo Screen Printing

Aloha,

My apologies on such late posting..I've been really focused on narrowing in on my brand. Took almost all of the feed back into consideration. With Tania's suggestion of Hawaii I stuck with it and road the creative wave. My minimalistic ways still shine in my branding but it portrays the modern-surf culture feel I directed the brands audience towards.

*My design brief is sized 7 x 5 (ultimately a mini design brief brochure) minus back page.

Photos are always a key focus for my branding so I spent a lot of time trying to find ones that are consistent with each other. Also, I chose a black logo but have not paired with a color.

Some things I was wondering...
Do any of the photos seem inconsistent with the brand/other photos?
I spend a lot of time on 'simple' design which is a lot more work than it may look but the question is, does it look too simple?
Does not having a color loose strength in the overall brand?

Looking forward to commenting on all your work & any feed back you guys might have!

  1. I love your logo a lot, it has style and simplicity. However, I find the black box to feel a little too corporate. I love the imagery and effects of the waves you added. Im almost curious to see what your logo would look like if it was a dark blue. The darkness of it will be so similar to the black that it wont be a dramatic change and it will match and compliment with your blue waves. Lastly, I love how you included the Hawaii state in your letterhead. It makes it look professional and helps brand and represents your company.

  2. Hey Lauren,

I love everything about this. I know we are suppose to help you find ways to improve this and bring it to the next level but I think you nailed it. Your company is clearly represented, your style is unique and your logo is simple and clever. I can't wait to see what comes next!

  3. Hey Lauren,

I am really loving the over-all vibe from this project, I liked your choices for imagery and it definitely represents the brand cohesively. My one suggestion would be to get rid of the black completely and use a monochromatic color scheme. I think if you pulled blue colors from the water image you used on the front cover that would give you a great range from light to dark and everything would pop a little more. I think you should use blue simply because your shop will be surrounded by vibrant colors and vast oceans. I think the black takes away from the over-all presence of the brand. Also I know you asked if the design is too simple, I don't think it's too simple I think it's a great balance but with a little color it wont seem as simple anymore.

  4. Lauren – you have gotten some good feedback here, and I want to agree with the addition of color to your great logo. In fact – more “beachy” colorful images could/should be used in the brochure. You start the design out strong, with the high-energy blue artwork behind your logo. The edges of that color spot are scratchy and the strokes seem to have been done quickly… again, a good high-energy approach. I see that you have created this same type of border on the beach scene on page 3 – which is good I think, as long as we feel like it’s a slightly different shape and not repeated exactly from the cover shape. (One way to do this quickly is by Free Transforming this shape in Photoshop – let me know if you aren’t sure.)

Are you intending to treat all the image borders with this same approach? That might work, or it might become redundant. Not sure what you are thinking… but a secondary approach to your images could be accomplished by controlling the colors more intentionally, and/or by posterizing them. Do you know what this is? For instance – the VW bug is a great color, but the environment doesn’t add much to the feel of the beach scene. If you were to posterize this image, which reduces the number of individual colors in the image – you could then replace those colors with colors of your choosing (something other than the grays of that street scene). I encourage you to continue the bright, spontaneous and artsy approach that I see on the cover throughout the campaign projects.

If you are using the location (Hawaii) in your campaign (and why not?) let’s see some high surf, some action shots, and some young people setting the fashion trend with Tshirt designs (maybe your logo on at least one super cute surfer dude?).

You are right – designing a less-chaotic and simple layout isn’t particularly easier than more complicated ones. And, it means that each of the elements that you DO use, has to be particularly well considered. Each one adding to the concept you have developed, and each one prepared especially for that purpose. It is often more work – but usually results in a more cohesive and strong campaign. Keep up the good work.
